Originally, my plan was to depict a boy residing in a staunchly conservative household, characterized by Christian-loving parents and a prominent Confederate flag proudly displayed in the living room. I envisioned him cleaning his gun on the sofa—a scene that encapsulated the cultural and ideological backdrop of his upbringing. However, after investing 8 hours into the drawing, I found myself dissatisfied with the composition. Despite my affinity for the concept, the execution fell short of my expectations, prompting a decision to completely overhaul the subject matter.
Undeterred by this setback, I embarked on a new artistic direction, spurred by a reference photo depicting a baby playing with a bong. The juxtaposition of innocence and taboo immediately resonated with me, igniting a creative spark that propelled me forward. While a bong is undoubtedly not an item suitable for a child, the image of a cherubic baby innocently interacting with it struck a chord.
Upon first glance at the revised work, it may appear as though the baby is actually partaking in a rip from the bong—an intentional optical illusion designed to provoke a reaction and challenge societal norms. However, upon closer inspection, the absence of a lighter in the baby's hand becomes apparent. Instead, the infant is depicted teething on the neck of the bong, while playfully exploring the bowl part with one hand—an innocent gesture imbued with deeper layers of symbolism and commentary.
This reinterpretation of the original concept allowed me to explore themes of innocence, perception, and cultural taboos in a thought-provoking and visually compelling manner. By subverting expectations and challenging preconceived notions, I aimed to create a piece of art that stimulates dialogue and encourages viewers to reconsider their assumptions about societal norms and values.
