Reading 3: At the Edge of the Sun

At the Edge of the Sun groups twelve Los Angeles artists who have managed to forge real connections over time which is pretty much through shared spaces, conversations, and experiences. It feels more like a co-curation between friends rather than one of those ad hoc group exhibitions-and that makes it stand out. These artists are not interested in the typical pictures of LA. They rather focus on facets that really matter to them- backyard parties, public transit, car detailing, and vernacular architecture. It is a very intimate kind of relationship with place.

What I found most interesting was the working between everyday methods and the fine arts, as in sign painting, lowrider detailing, building with adobe, and ceramics. It brings this sort of hands-on, community spirit to the show. It is not only about presenting work but also presenting how culture, trade, and memory interact with art. Another aspect that pleases me is that the artists engaged in shaping the show as a whole rather than washing their hands merely by contributing works of art. As a result, this reminds us that art scenes can be formed from friendships and respect for shared labor.
